Match ANY search word
Search for pages which contain AT LEAST ONE of the given search terms. Click the
Any word button
to enable this search option.
Match ALL search words
Search for pages which contain ALL of the given search terms. Click the
All words button to enable
this search option. Note that the search criteria will be satisfied if the words
appear anywhere and in any order on the page and many other terms may appear
between them. To find only those pages where the words appear exactly in the
sequence entered, perform an exact phrase search by enclosing the sequence of
search terms in quotation marks as described below.
Exact phrase searches
To specify an exact phrase search, enclose the words that form the
phrase using quotation marks (").
An exact phrase search returns results where the phrase of words are found
in the same order that they are specified. For example, an exact phrase search
for the words "green tea" would only return results where the phrase 'green tea'
appears. It would not return pages where the words 'green' and 'tea' are found
separately, or in a different order such as, 'tea green.'
You can combine the use of exact phrase searches with normal search terms and
wildcard search terms (as described below) within a single search query (e.g., '"green tea" japan*').
Note however, that wildcards within exact phrases (e.g., "green te*") are NOT
supported.
Wildcard searches
You can use wildcard characters '*' and '?' in your search terms to search
for multiple words and return larger set of results.
An asterisk character ('*') in a search term represents any number of
characters, while a question mark ('?') represents any single character.
Using wildcard characters you can perform advanced searches such as 'car*'
which would return all pages containing words beginning with 'car' such as
'care,' 'cars,' 'carried,' and 'carrying.' Using 'c?r?' would
return all pages containing four-letter words beginning with 'c' and having 'r'
as the third letter such as 'care,' 'cars,' and 'cure.' Also, '*car*' would
return all pages containing words in which the
characters 'car' appear such as 'car,' 'vicar,' and 'vicarious."
Exclusion/negative searches
You can precede a search term with a hyphen character ('-') to exclude that
search term from your search results. For example, a search for 'cat -dog' would
return all pages containing the word "cat" and do not contain the word "dog."
Category searches
You can restrict your search to specific types of files by choosing a defined
category from the drop-down box on the top right of each page or selecting one
or more categories using the check boxes near the bottom of search results pages.
The category 'Issues' refers to issues of the paper that
are stored as plain text on this website (ocn.me). OCN started publication in the year 2001. Volume 1 was published in 2001, Volume 2
was published in 2002, and so forth. The web addresses for
web pages containing articles show the volume and issue number in the form
"vYnM.htm" where Y is the volume number, which is
the number of the year
minus 2000, and M is the issue number, which is the number of the month.
For example, the web address for the page containing the articles from the January 8, 2011 issue is
www.ocn.me/v11n1.htm.
The category 'PDFs' refers to individual page and full issue Adobe
Acrobat PDF (Portable Document Format) files from the printed
newspapers. The individual pages are stored as PDF files with names of the form vYnM
P.pdf where Y
is the volume number, which is number of the year minus 2000, and M is
the issue number, which is the number of the month, and P is the page
number. Note that there is one space between the issue number M and the
page number P. For example, the name of the PDF file containing page 5
from the January 8, 2011 issue is "v11n1 5.pdf." The full issue
PDF files have names of the form vYnM.pdf (e.g., v11n1.pdf for
our January 8, 2011 issue).
Note that searching the 'PDFs' category can often be used to find the
content of ads in the
paper; however, some ads are prepared as graphic images and so ad-related search
terms will not be found
even in a search of the 'PDFs' category.
The category 'Info' refers to files on this website that are neither 'Issues'
nor 'PDFs'. Those include Microsoft Word documents, and PowerPoint files.
The category 'WordPress' refers to content on our mobile-friendly
WordPress-based website wp.ocn.me.
Sort by relevance/Sort by date
The score representing the relevance of each page in the search results is based on the
number of search terms matched on the page and where the search terms were found on the
page.
The date for each page found is determined by the date of publication of the
associated issue or, in the event the page is not related to one specific issue
of the newspaper, the last modified date and time for that particular page.
